Careers with Aetna International - Global health care provider Aetna International recently surveyed 2,000 expat employees across the globe, to find out which aspects of international relocation affect their health and well-being the most.
Among the questions, expats were asked to name which aspects of living in the UAE they found the most challenging. The survey revealed that:

  • 91% of expats in the UAE found 'dating' the most challenging aspect of moving abroad. This is higher than the global average (76%)
  • 90% of expats in the UAE found that 'dating' had an impact on their well-being. This is twice the global average (45%)
  • 91% of expats in the UAE found that 'finding new friends' had an impact on their well-being. This is more than double the global average (43%)
  • 40% of expats in the UAE felt that 'finding a community' had an impact on their well-being. This is higher than the global average (24%)

Challenges and social barriers expats

Adding to these figures, of the expats that found dating difficult, 57% were men while 43% were women. Could these challenges, namely dating, be caused by the social barriers expats face when moving there? For example, the survey also revealed that:

  • 19% of expats in the UAE felt that gender had been a barrier to them settling. This is more than the global average (13%)
  • 15% of expats in the UAE felt that ethnicity had been a barrier to them settling. This is more than the global average (9%)
  • 6% of expats in the UAE felt that religion had been a barrier to them settling. This is more than the global average (2%)

Of the expats that found gender to be a barrier, 83% were women while only 17% were men.

The survey also revealed that, globally, gender discrimination was felt by women the most - with 25% saying that gender has been a barrier for them, compared to just 5% of men.
