Care Standards Under Scrutiny at South London Care Home

A care home in the South London ward of New Cross has been criticised by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) over the standards of care it provides to its residents.

The Manley Court care home was inspected back in July in an unannounced spot check. Following the inspection, CQC officers compiled a report criticising the levels of care training and staffing at the home. The report stated:

“There were not enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet the people’s needs”.

The report also detailed how one patient was left without a call bell to use if they needed help, whilst other bedbound residents were not checked regularly enough by staff to see if their beds were clean. Another patient did not receive their food because the agency night nurse on duty did not know how to use a feeding tube to administer it.

Bupa Care Homes, which runs the Manley Court home, has now been told that it must improve standards or it could face further action from the CQC. Bupa’s Vivienne Birch has since released a statement, in which she says:

“The health and wellbeing of our residents is our absolute priority and we have taken immediate action, including a review of all care plans for the residents in the home and introduced further training for all staff on the unit identified in the report.”
