Knee replacement is a surgical process in which the weight bearing part in our knees is replaced with an artificial object. It is performed in order to relieve the knees from pain and ensure ease in walking. The patients that suffer from osteoarthritis tend to undergo the knee replacement surgery. It is advisable to get this surgery done once it is detected in early stage. Knee replacement cannot be avoided. Patients who experience inflammation, disability in walking and knee pain are advisable to visit their doctor for diagnosis. A person might avoid this surgery in early stages but it is very challenging. This problem is generally found in elderly aged persons.

Can one really avoid this surgery?

Our knees bear the weight of our whole body. It is very essential for a person to control his or her weight. Weight management is actually a key to healthy living. However, there are certain fitness centers and health experts that have suggested ways in which one can prevent the knee replacement surgery. One such way is losing weight. Experts have advised patients to loosen their weight for avoiding knee replacement surgery. However this is a myth. Once the knees come in a condition for replacement, the patients cannot help themselves. Yes they can take care but they cannot avoid this surgery. The weight bearing part of our body cannot be repaired naturally after it is damaged. It is replaced artificially in surgery.

However, the patients need to take utmost care post knee replacement surgery. Our weight plays an important role after the surgery. Our actual body weight brings three times pressure on the artificial joint. So, the patient needs to lose weight. Increasing body weight puts the knee of other leg in danger. In the initial days, the patient should rest. But after few days and months, the patient can start leading a normal life. They should work out in gym, play golf, swim, etc…. These sports will help in reducing weight as well as maintain the pressure on the artificial joints. One cannot alone depend on exercise. Our Food intake will also keep its eyes on our weight. It is really important to avoid junk and fatty food items. Fruits, vegetables, sprouts, fiber, etc… should be consumed the most. Though these creamy and cheesy food items sound very pleasing to taste buds but they might give an adverse effect to knees.

 It is essential for the person to maintain a routine. Working out, exercise, yoga and consumption of food items must be done as per routine. Also, an early and sound sleep will be a relaxing therapy for knees.

Inclusion of all dietary and drinking supplements will keep a balance in diet. Reduction on Trans fat items, high on calorie, dairy products, etc… should be done at the earliest. It is advisable to consume 7 to 8 glasses of water minimum on daily basis.  Patients should cut down on alcohol intakes as well.

Hence, one cannot avoid knee replacement surgery by just losing weight. Weight needs to be management post surgery.
