Can coffee cause paralysis?

Coffee is a much debated topic in the area of health. While a section of researchers are of the opinion that too much coffee can cause serious harm to the body, there is a section that do not take coffee as a serious threat to human health. Whatever the opinions might be, coffee remains a favorite with many.

Though there has not been any concrete study on the ill effects of coffee on health, the addictiveness of coffee has been established. Holistic practitioners are against the use of coffee while allopathic physicians might not take coffee that seriously.

Coffee contains caffeine, an alkaloid substance that can cause stimulating effects on brain and lessen fatigue. Continuous and over use of coffee thus cause a serious addiction that at one point the people cannot function normally without drinking coffee. That is the reason why you find people saying that they suffer from a headache if they do not get their daily dose of coffee. The adrenal glands get so much stimulated that it takes high intake of caffeine to bring it back to normal.

A study undertaken by a doctor named Colombo in 1679 at the Marseilles University is said to have found that since coffee has burnt particles in large numbers, they are powerful enough to destroy lymph and even cause harmful effect on kidneys. Since it also has the capacity to disturb the water supply to the brain, coffee can cause paralysis and impotence in addition to exhaustion. Though the study was made so many years ago, there has not been any follow up to this study. Hence we do not know what the current research or statistics say about the connection between coffee and paralysis.

Another reason why coffee can be linked to paralysis is that coffee can aggravate blood pressure. It was found that people who were already suffering from hypertension, when given around 250 mg of coffee, their blood pressure rose after two hours of the coffee intake. So, the blood pressure of a person with hypertension can increase more if he has a high intake of coffee. High blood pressure causes the blood vessels in the brain to explode, which is a major cause of paralysis. Hence there must be some connection between coffee and paralysis, though there is no evident scientific back up for the link as of now.

There is one finding that states that if caffeine is inoculated into muscles, it can cause paralysis and that if even 10 grams of caffeine is amassed in the brain, it can cause sudden death. Though there are no ways this can happen, there is no need to worry about it. Yet, too much coffee can cause adversely on health that is a common finding.

In brief, it can be concluded that having coffee once in a while or moderately with little or no sugar, may not cause very adverse effects on health. But at the same time, over use of coffee or having 3-4 cups of coffee with sugar can cause weight gain, high sugar levels and even addiction to coffee. Hence it is best to have green tea instead that coffee cup.
