Bursts of Action and Bouts of Lethargy (Nablopomo Day 2)

By Elizabeth Comiskey @lazyhippiemama

*This post is Day Two of the January Nablopomo 30-day blogging challenge hosted by BlogHer.

I’m a rock star when it comes to sprinting. (Metaphorically speaking. In actuality I don’t run. Ever.) Put me under a deadline and tell me to shoot for the moon and I’ll deliver you half the galaxy on a silver platter with a big read bow on top. And THEN…

I won’t do anything at all for the next two months. Seriously, nothing. I’m in a vegetative state, staring at the words on the pages of poorly-written novels while my internal batteries recharge.

Sometimes this works out great. I’m pretty proud of some of the things I’ve achieved over the years.

Often it’s less than ideal. My yard is a great example. I had a list of projects to complete before first frost. It was a LONG list and I was a wild woman. I harvested and tilled and weeded and mulched. I put out decorations and hung swings and trimmed trees. I started to build this amazing multi-level raised bed that wrapped around the house and then first frost hit and I walked away. The raised bed is, at this moment, half built. There is wood, measured and cut, laying in my yard waiting to be nailed together but the moment passed so I just never got back to it, not even when we’ve had some nice days here and there. It’s possible my hammer and nails are still out there too. I don’t even know. It didn’t get done during the first big sprint and I just haven’t worked up the mojo to make a second run at it.

The result of this… uhm… shall we call it a quirk? Is that my life tends to often be a prime example of “two steps forward one step back.” I make forward progress but I waste a lot of time and resources.

Today’s Nablopomo writing prompt asked, “Do you usually keep your resolutions?” My answer: Yes! I’m REALLY good at it. For a while.

This is not a personality trait that I’m proud of. I’m a big believer in seasons of life (see yesterday’s post). I think it’s normal and good and healthy to have times of growth, which is often messy and sometimes painful. I also think those times need to be followed by seasons of rest. It’s a cycle we see in every part of our world and it only makes sense. And yet I believe it is important that a season of rest doesn’t become a habit of slothfulness and I realize that I need to get better about seeing things through to the very end.

I didn’t make any resolutions this year. I did, however, together with my family, choose a word of the year: CONSISTENT.

We have some goals we are working toward, individually and as a family, and the only way we will reach them is if we can remain consistent for the next several months. This can’t be a year of sprints and vegetative states for me, or it will end up being, “The Year In Which I Tossed Away Everything We’ve Been Working For In The Previous Several Years.” Personally and as a family we are standing at a crossroads. 2015 has the potential to be a major turning point in our lives so now is not the time to lose my mojo and leave my hammer out in the rain. You know… metaphorically speaking.

I hope you’ll stick around and come along for the ride. I have a good feeling that great things are on the horizon and it would be so fun to share them with you!

What about you? Do you make resolutions?
Are you good at keeping them?
