Yesterday was epic. I had my first real experience of “stand up” surfing. Man, I was useless! The paddling and catching the wave wasn’t a problem – basically the huge swelly board I was on was like a great big bodyboard, but popping up was a different matter!
My pop up itself was ok, quick enough and I was landing in roughly the right position, but I kept leaning forward instead of keeping my back straight and more importantly I was standing upright to quickly when I should have kept low for a bit and stabilising. I did manage to stand up a few times and ride the wave in, of course on those occasions I did the obligatory “hands in the air waving the shakka”.
I had a great time! I had my lesson with Scott from The Bude Surf Experience . Scott was really friendly and patient, I can thoroughly recommend him if you’re thinking of having a lesson.
To say that my surfing horizons have been opened is an understatement.
Today (tuesday) , I’m in Perranporth. I haven’t been here since 1999 for the Solar eclipse and it hasn’t changed at all, a bit bigger maybe but that’s only to be expected. I arrived here around 08:30 and of course immediately checked out the surf conditions. Messy, but with some definite potential for later.
The only choice I have to make today is : Sponge or Surf?
