Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

If it seems like I’m doing a lot of finished/stave adulterated American Whiskey reviews lately, like this Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado, that’s because I am. And that’s because there’s a lot of it out there these days. It’s easily the biggest trend in American whiskey right now. Take a whiskey and try to make it better with other barrels.

Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado

The practice has been done for a long, long, looooong time in Scotland, but in America it’s fairly new. Beam tried their hand at it in the 90s and people laughed at them, but the tables have turned and just about everyone is doing some kind of cask finish. Though few folks are breaking down those barrels and just using the staves like this.

Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Infuse Spirits’ Words:

“We deliver one-of-a-kind collaborations by maturing American whiskey with rare oak from around the world. We’ve sourced our whiskey for these bottles from Kentucky and Indiana, and married each blend with oak barrel staves from all around the world… Spain for aged amontillado sherry. Each barrel gives the whiskey a unique, rich, and complex taste and character not commonly found in American whiskey…. The Cask of Amontillado is a blend of 12-year-old American whiskey and five-year-old Kentucky corn whiskey. The result is a synthesis nowhere to be found with traditional whiskey.”

Sweet and woody with some nice fruity and cereal notes coming through and complementing each other nicely. My favorite of this series.

Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado Review: Overall and Score

Aroma is good with a soft sweet complexity that pulls in some fruity roasty notes; Palate is a blend of young notes and old notes with pops of spirit here and there mixing with spicy and herbal notes; Finish is nice, but picks up a bit of that woody craft profile.

Not bad, not bad at all; Broken Barrel The Cask of Amontillado is definitley my favorite of their cask series – it’s a decently sippable whiskey. A touch sweet but mostly grainy, I can see how a broad spectrum of palates could like this one. It also seems to have a profile that will do well in cocktails. I look forward to experimenting with it for sure.

SCORE: 3/5
