When we aren’t traveling the country taking in festivals and are looking for a decent dinner out that’s both affordable and filling for the entire family Boston Pizza has always been one of the choices. A year ago we celebrated our wedding, informally, with our family at Boston Pizza in Brockville so for our first anniversary my wife and I decided it would be a fitting venue.
When I first started this blog I never had any intention of becoming a food writer until my wife suggested I consider reviewing some of the great, and not so great, restaurants been to. Getting an invite from Lone Star a few weeks ago to try out their new menu was the push that I needed and now not even a week later is my second food blog, this time about the new Southwest menu items at Boston Pizza.
Selecting a menu item at Boston Pizza has always been a difficult process for me, mainly because I like pretty much everything on their menu. I generally play it safe and go with either Pizza or Pasta and in this case we happened to be there for Pasta Tuesday which helped make the decision a bit easier, well at least it narrowed it down to a selection of pastas. It was my wife that suggested we give the new menu items a try so we decided to go with the Southwest Potato Skins and then the Pulled Pork Penne as the main course.
Southwest Potato Skins
The appetizer at a restaurant is important to get right, it has to be filling enough to tide you over until the main course comes along but not so filling that you have no room left for the main course. The Southwest Potato Skins, which are topped with BBQ sauce, chipotle chicken, smokey bacon, melted cheddar and pizza mozzarella and drizzled with Boston Pizza’s garlic dressing, fit the bill perfectly. Each bite literally melts in your mouth and awakens your taste buds making them crave for more.
Pulled Pork Penne
I’m a relative novice when it comes to pulled pork, having only been introduced to the dish about 4 or 5 years ago but I must say that since then I’ve become a big fan. I’ve had pulled pork poutine and pulled pork pizza so I figured that Pulled Pork Penne was a natural progression, I ordered mine with a side of garlic bread with cheese (the perfect compliment to any pasta dish in my opinion). The Pulled Pork Penne is pulled pork tossed in Boston Pizza’s Bolognese meat sauce, mixed with penne and balsamic-roasted red onions and finished with a whisky BBQ drizzle, crispy fried onions, Parmesan cheese and green onions. If that doesn’t make your mouth water I don’t know what will. It’s impossible to describe the taste in any other way than mmmmmmm. I don’t know what other combinations of pulled pork exist out there but let me tell you, the only thing better than pulled pork is Boston Pizza’s Pulled Pork Penne. One more thing I should add, make sure you bring your appetite when you order this item. Don’t let the picture fool you, the pulled pork penne is a mountain of pasta and is very filling.
Of course there are dozens of more new menu items at Boston Pizza right now that we just didn’t have the time, or the budget to sample. Perhaps that will be the subject of a future blog post. Until then go and try these two items, heck bring the whole family they have fun dishes for the kids too.
