Boone’s Bourbon Homegrown Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Continuing our mini-series on young whiskey, today’s bourbon review is the Boone’s Bourbon Homegrown Whiskey. The brainchild of American singer/songwriter Tyler Boone, the bourbon is sourced by Striped Pig in Charleston, SC and goes through a “unique process” before bottling. I have to give them a big thumbs up on being clear it’s sourced on their site, but the label is another matter…

Boone's Bourbon Homegrown Whiskey

The back of the label contains the most notorious phrase in whiskeydom: “Produced and Bottled by…” We know it’s sourced, per their website, but the label is missing the state of distillation. Hoping to get to the bottom of this quickly I reached out to Tyler directly and asked him where it came from and he confirmed Indiana… but it wasn’t always that way.

The first batch did all come from Striped Pig. It sold out quickly and so they switched to MGP to get a reliable supply for the quickly growing brand. So it’s obviously not missing due to trickery, just due to a need in label updating. Easy enough, but a question still remained about the “unique process” their bourbon goes through. Which he also offered up: Terrapure.

The whiskey is shipped to Terresentia where they put it through the Terrapure process. Which, in a nutshell, is taking the whiskey and pumping it through an oxygenated chamber that’s bombarded with ultrasound. This sounds exactly like the “patented” process Merica Bourbon goes through and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

After processing it’s shipped back to Striped Pig for bottling. So there you have it, an MGP bourbon aged for 6 months that went through the Terrapure process. Now, let’s get on with the good part: the Boone’s Bourbon review.

Tasting Notes

EYE
Light caramel

NOSE
Wood, grain, fruit, custard, and waxy vanilla.

PALATE
Grainy, buttered grits, wood, caramel, toffee and some fruit and wax.

FINISH
Med-> Sweetly grainy and dryly woody.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Not fully balanced, medium body and a dry feel.

For a 6-month-old bourbon it’s not bad. The spirit notes and wood notes have yet to integrate and they battle each other a bit, but it’s a decent start, not just needs more maturity.

Boone’s Bourbon Homegrown Whiskey Review: Overall and Score

Aroma is simple, soft and grainy in a way that’s approachable and carries a custard-like sweetness that increases alongside the young woody profile as it opens; Palate, again, is simple and fruity light with a grain dominant profile and raw wood – the two have yet to integrate; Finish is sweet and woody.

For a 6-month-old whiskey, it’s not bad. They obviously have a good distillate (MGP), now it just needs to mature and integrate with the notes pulled from the wood. Comparing it to the other 6 mo whiskeys I reviewed this week (Trader Joe’s Tennessee Bourbon and ‘Merica Bourbon) I’d take the Boone’s Bourbon Homegrown Whiskey over either one without question. It’s a good start for sure.

SCORE: 1.5/5
