I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
Alice is being charged with the murder of a man who committed suicide while she did nothing to stop him or get help which may or may not have saved him. Basically, she watched him die because he did not want to die alone. Trying to understand what happened is Cate, a Probation Officer.
The question is whether Alice is guilty of murder? Is she at all sane? Did she knowingly allow a person to kill himself for the sheer sick enjoyment of it? Is assisting someone commit suicide right? These are but a few questions a reader will have to deal with while reading the book.
There are so many readers and reviewers who have raved about how wonderful this book is. And they may be right. However, I personally found this book rather -- well, boring. I was well within the first 25% of the book and I was at a loss as to finding a reason to keep reading and running out of ways to stifle yawns.
I find no flaws in how it is written. The writing is pretty good. But it is just not my type of story to read. I found it "too wordy" (for lack of a better description) at times, and just plain torture to keep reading.
Do note that just because I did not particularly like this book does not mean you should not try to read it. It may be just the book you are looking for even though it clearly is not that for me.
