Reverend Jimmy Aldridge is protesting in front of a women's clinic. While protesting, a black SUV drives by, stops, and someone shoots him three times. Now the hunt is on for the killer.
The sheriff, Shelby Mitchell, is a man who loves his job and wants to get re-elected. Because of that, he knows he needs to solve the murder fast and catch the killer. He calls on Detective Darla Cavanaugh.
Darla used to be from Jackson but moved to Mississippi after she married football star Hugh Cavanaugh who died in a car crash. After Hugh died, Darla took a break and the call from Sheriff Mitchell was not exactly a welcome distraction. But she owes the Sheriff a favor so she agrees to help out.
However, Darla finds herself needing to work with an Elvis impersonator as a partner -- a guy who happens to be related to the mayor and wants to hog all the limelight. But he isn't exactly a model investigator either and Darla needs all the patience she can get. Especially since the guy is so sure that the doctor at the clinic is the killer.
Darla has to interview all possible suspects and the doctor is one of them. Dr. Nicoletti is an ob-gyn and, when it has been requested by a patient, performs abortion. He appears to be the main suspect as far as the Elvis impersonating cop is concerned (as well as the victim's wife). Moreover, he has no alibi or at least, he won't reveal specific details that could help his case. And, he owns a dark colored SUV.
Also helping her is a computer geek named after Kind Arthur's father. She enlists his help in finding clues that will hopefully lead to arresting the killer. But the trail of clues leads them to another road which reveals shocking details about things that are going on.
The Last Clinic is a fast-paced murder mystery with a lot of twists and turns -- though some are not too believable. The story is well-told and is exciting enough to keep the reader turning page after page.
