The Godborn is the second book of a series of books written by different authors -- The Sundering. This second book is written by Paul S. Kemp. The book is due for release on October 1, 2013. I received a copy of the book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The story revolves around a man named Vasen Cale. He is the son of Erevis Vale and Varra born in the Abbey of the Rose. His mother had managed to run away from an attack and she was found by Derreg and his group of Drawnswords tasked to protect the Abbey. Varra dies while giving birth. The child appeared to be like a Shadovar because he had yellow eyes and as Derreg was holding the child (he had given his word to Varra that he will raise the child) a Shadowfell godling named Dresken Riven visits them and gives Derreg a weapon that once belonged to the baby's father and was to be given to the child when he is grown. Riven had told Derreg that Vasen will have a very important role to play in the future.
When Vassen reaches his 30th year, the Oracle of the Abbey visits him and tells him that he must lead a group of people out of the Abbey soon. Vassen received messages from the spirits around the Abbey that tell him of his father, Erevis needing his help. Thus Vasen goes on a journey to find his father, whom he has believed to be dead, and to rescue him from Cania which is the 8th level of Hell. To do so, he will have to intervene between very powerful forces -- Mephistopheles who is the Archfiend of Cania, his father's friend Riven Tanthul who is the Nightseer of the goddess Shar and Drasken Riven who is a godling possessing a fraction of the power of the Mask.
Will Vasen be able to find and save his father in time? Will the Cycle be broken? Will Vasen be able to unite the two sides within him -- light and shadow?
The Godborn is very different from the first book in The Sundering Series, The Companions. It is a much darker story. Although there may be readers who may not find this book as interesting as the first one, I liked it even though the story is rather dark. I am definitely looking forward to the third book in the series.
