My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley in exchanged for my honest and unbiased review.
Dr. Sheridan "Danny" Doyle is a shrink -- a famous forensic psychologist, in fact. Danny is the son of a drunk miner and a mentally disturbed mother. If that was not bad enough, his mother has been accused of killing his baby sister Molly while she was an infant and has been in and out of mental institutions. Danny managed to go to college and get himself out of the small Pennsylvania mining town called Lost Creek. He has made a name for himself and is living a pretty good life.
As an infamous killer is about to be put to death, Danny learns that his grandfather, Tommy, has been ill. As much as he would like to stay away from Lost Creek, Danny needs to see Tommy and find out for himself how his grandfather is doing. Upon his arrival to his hometown, Dr. Doyle finds a body and finds himself drawn back into his old life. His nightmares are back. And, it seems the number of murders within the small mining town is steadily climbing.
One of Us is a psychological thriller that has some exciting characters and many twists and turns. It is an exciting read and most of the characters are well developed. Having said that, a major part of the story is incredibly predictable -- switched at birth is kind of old and dated. I would have given this book a lot more stars if only the old "switcheroo" twist wasn't so darned obvious. An entertaining book nonetheless.
