Murder on Cue is a light murder mystery. It is the first book in the Jocelyn O'Roarke Mystery. The story revolves around theater actress Jocelyn O'Roarke. She has been roped in to be the understudy of Harriet Weldon who plays the role of a Lawyer in a brand new play written by her old friend Austin. Almost no one among the cast is happy about having Harriet on the play but as her husband is the play's producer, they have no choice but to work with her though she clearly has very little talent, if any at all.
To make things more complicated, when Harriet had suddenly taken ill, Jocelyn had to take on her role and she did a great job at it much to Harriet's discomfiture. During one of the routine rehearsals for the play, Harriet is found dead in her dressing room. The police are investigating and Detective-Sergeant Phillip Gerrard is trying to solve the case.
The problem is there are a lot of suspects -- almost each and every person involved in the play has some reason to hate Harriet. Jocelyn or Josh, as her friends call her, is one of the prime suspects. She stands to get the job Harriet had now that Harriet is dead. Plus, the two women had an altercation a few hours before the murder.
Jane Dentinger writes a witty, funny and entertaining murder mystery. I love the book because I really liked the author's sense of humor. Although I am not much of a theater fan and I did have some trouble with some of the quotes lifted from plays that have been interspersed within the book, I just enjoyed reading something funny and light.
Should you be on the lookout for a light whodunit, this is a good book to read.
