My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Surprisingly, City of Ashes is a lot better than its predecessor, City of Bones. I was pleasantly surprised. Cassandra Clare managed to improve the pace of the story.
As for the Clary and Jace thing; well, what can I say? I enjoyed reading the book but it was not because of the lead characters... Does that make any sense? The thing is, their relationship is being revealed as something that is incestuous. Although I do have the feeling that there is a twist somewhere along the series that will reveal that they have no reason to be so tortured about being "related," I just can't seem to be drawn to those two.
I continue to like the character of Simon and Isabel. And Magnus the warlock is just impossible not to like. His friendship with Alec is quite interesting. Again, it is because of my curiosity as to what will happen next vis-a-vis the supporting characters that are leading me to read the next book in the series. That, and the hope (more like a fervent wish) that the quality of the lead characters will improve.
