What inspired you to start your own blog?

I first started Sensible Stylista because I wanted to learn more about social media. I’m a concert pianist by day, so I wanted to figure out how to, in essence, act as my own manager. I knew internet marketing was the future, so I read up on the subject as much as possible, and applied it all on my blog. After a year or so of hustling hardcore, SS took off, and I’ve been posting consistently ever since.

How important is the name of the blog?

I’m all about smart shopping and affordable living, so I wanted that to be apparent right from the outset. Plus, I really liked the alliteration!

How difficult is it to find a blog niche?

It’s not difficult if you’re passionate about your subject matter. However, it’s important to have a specific target audience in mind when writing up your posts! Think about their age, profession, geographic location, hobbies, and so on and so forth. This will help you figure out how to brand your blog.

What is the best way to promote and grow your blog?

Be consistent and genuine. Ultimately, everything comes down to trust! Only partner up with brands that you sincerely love, and make sure you keep an editorial calendar to keep content flowing! Whether you post once or five times a week, your readers are counting on you. If you choose to post once a week, make sure it’s the same day/time so they know when to check back.

What is your main audience and how did you reach out to them?

I have a wide range of readers, but they’re mostly females in their 20s and early 30s. I attract them by producing content that’s helpful and informative. Remember, no one’s going to read your blog just because. You have to enhance their life in some way, shape or form. It’s all about value!

How important is it for your business to attend fashion week?

Sensible Stylista is for the everyday girl, like myself, so it’s not crucial for me to attend NYFW, but it’s definitely on my bucket list. I’ve been invited to a ton of shows over the years, but I’ve never been able to make it out to NYC because of my ridiculous schedule – something always seems to come up last minute. I’m currently a dual degree doctoral student, full-time blogger, piano teacher, concert pianist and freelance social media consultant, so I don’t have much free time.

What are the best tips for building long-term relationships and partnerships with brands?

Communication is key. Always keep them in the loop! If they’re sending you sponsored items, let them know you’ve received them. If you blasted your feature, shoot them a message with the link and let them know. Be courteous and thank them for their business. It’s important to stay on top of things! If you’re disorganized, buy a calendar and make sure you jot everything down. There are a million bloggers out there – distinguish yourself by being professional.

What is the biggest challenge about running a blog?

There are various challenges, but from my personal experience, I’d say coming up with quality content on the daily. I post from 3 – 6 times a week, so it’s not always easy. However, quality trumps quantity. Do NOT publish sub-par posts!

What advice would you give to anyone looking to start a blog today?

Don’t do it for money or fame! Blog because you are beyond passionate about the content you’re creating. If you’re just looking to make a fast buck, people will see right through you and coin you as a phony.

What are your ultimate plans for your blog/blogging career?

I’m just going to continue doing my best, and see where life takes me. I’m proud of Sensible Stylista, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the future!
