Blood Oath Pact 4 Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Blood Oath Pact 4

Blood Oath Pact 4 is a decent whiskey. I don’t like it as much as I did Blood Oath Pact 2, which was awesome, but nonetheless it was still a tasty whiskey that makes a decent Old Fashioned. Which, thanks to some of my co-workers, I was able to enjoy while doing some work travel via a Carry On Cocktail Kit. I’ve talked about the kit a couple of times recently and will have a review of that coming soon, but right now we’re talking about the Blood Oath Pact 4.

Like all of the BO releases the Blood Oath Pact 4 is a blend of bourbons of different ages. To enhance this release, and further separate it from the rest, this release finished its youngest bourbon (the 9 yo) in barrels that were toasted instead of charred.

In Luxco’s Words: Blood Oath Pact 4

“A masterful union of three well-bred bourbons, each bringing it’s own voice to the rich harmony found inside each bottle. The first, an extra-aged 12-year-old bourbon, provides a mellow, smooth finish with deep oak undertones. The second, a rich 10-year-old bourbon, provides warm caramel and honey flavors. The third, a 9-year-old bourbon finished in toasted bourbon barrels, adds deep chocolate, vanilla with extra spice.”

Blood Oath Pact 4 Tasting Notes

Fruit, honey, caramel, marshmallows, oak, spice, nuts and orange candy.

Caramel, dired fruit, honey, marshmallows, oak, leather and peanuts with a touch of banana taffy.

Medium -> Peanuts, cinnamon, oak, and marshmallow.

Decent sense of balance, medium body and a nice warm feel.

Blood Oath Pact 4 Review – OVERALL

Blood Oath Pact 4 is a nice simple bourbon that overall has an interesting fruit and candy quality to it. The aroma is quite fruity and candy sweet with the more rustic notes coming through lightly. The palate brings thoughts of peanut brittle and chewy peanut candy with the rustic notes again coming in light. It’s an interesting whiskey and the longer it sits the more peanutty it gets.

That strong peanut quality is what leads me to think it’s mostly sourced from Heaven Hill and all-in-all it makes me think of a slightly richer Evan Williams Bonded. I love tasting all of these Blood Oath experiments, it’s fun to see how the Luxco folks are thinking about bourbon and limited editions. Releases like this Blood Oath Pact 4 make me excited to see what they’re going to do once their own stocks are aged and ready to be experimented with as well.

SCORE: 86/100 (B)

*Disclosure: This Blood Oath Pact 4 sample was graciously sent to me by the company for the purposes of this review. The views, opinions, and tasting notes are 100% my own.
