Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

When I first heard about Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey I dismissed it as a nothing more than a branding stunt put together by a couple of extreme sports stars (Jeremy Rawle, Rob Dyrdek and Travis Pastrana). Then I checked out their site, social channels and apps and realized they’re trying to create not just a brand, but a community and that’s pretty cool.

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey

The whiskey is exactly what you’d expect from non-distillers: young MGP whiskey, the only kind that’s readily available these days at a decent price. Sourced in Indiana and bottled in Texas by a company headquartered in Utah, it’s an interesting grab at a very specific demographic. But art and branding can only get you so far, at the end of the day it’s what’s in the bottle that matters and we’re going to dig into the review right about… now.

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey Review: Details and Tasting Notes

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey is a sourced bourbon mixing two different ages of whiskey. The whiskey comes from MGP.

In Black Feather’s Words: Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey

Black Feather is made from two & three-year hand-picked allotments, combining the smoothness of corn and barley with the nutty bite of rye, layered with the rich char from Kentucky white oak barrels and the undertones of toasted cereal. The premium, but not precious, go-to American bourbon is to be enjoyed by all levels of whiskey drinkers that starts with an 86-proof kick and finishes with a welcomed, easy-going finish.

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey Review: OVERALL

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey Review

Black Feather American Bourbon Whiskey is a fairly average, young, bourbon whiskey sourced from MGP. The aroma is on the lighter side and over time the oak in the aroma shifts into a more raw delivery. The flavor is punchier and spicier than the aroma, but the youth definitely slides through with the oak profile being rawer here than on the nose.

We all know what well aged MGP high-rye stock can taste like with the likes of Redemption Barrel Proof Bourbon and so it’s interesting to taste something that sits in the 2-3 years range in comparison. It’s not a showpiece whiskey, but for a daily workhorse, the kind you can drink with friends at a cookout and mix in cocktails it’s great and comes at a decent price. So not too much to complain about here.

SCORE: 82/100 (B-)
