B had a birthday! He’s finally the big 1-8.
Juuuuuust kidding. Here he is bottling our most recent batch of kombucha (which I’m sad to say we’ve neglected and have to start from scratch again). What a guy! And what a lucky girl am I
.We celebrated by going to Candle Cafe with my mom; although she and I have been several times now, B never had, and we thought he’d enjoy it. We enjoyed a bottle of albariño, a Spanish white wine, between us. Albariño was the house white at one of the restaurants I hostessed at years ago, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for it.
B ordered the pasta special: rigatoni with broccoli and peas in a cashew-tomato cream sauce. Creamy dreamy!
My om ordered the lemon seitan with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes and crispy capers with a white wine lemon sauce. It was delicious! So much flavor going on.
I ordered another special, which I loved: basil-grilled tofu with Israeli couscous, sautéed greens and tomato sauce. The tofu was perfectly grilled, with a lovely smokey flavor.
Birthdays require dessert- and candles!- so after careful deliberation…
… we all shared the seasonal fruit crumb pie: strawberry peach with vanilla ice cream. It’s still summer, so it’s still pie season!
Do you like birthdays? I know some people who think it’s “just a day,” and some who love to go all out. I’m somewhere in between, but I hope to help make the people in my life feel like they’re special every day of the year.
