Big Chop Diaries: Days 1-2

By Ipage @xquisite_curls
It's about 48 hours after I cut all of the relaxed hair off of my head, also known as the Big Chop (BC). I have approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of hair left of my head. Considering that I had about 14 - 16 inches of hair prior to my BC, it's a pretty dramatic transformation.
So far (in my vast experience over the past 48 hours), I can say that there are 3 definite perks to this TWA (Teeny Weenie Afro).
1. No hair falling into my eyes. This one is a biggie. For me, at least. I'm one of those people who eternally believe that there are colonies of spiders just waiting for a chance to crawl across my face. Having hair that keeps falling across my face does not help my issue.
2. No hair is available to pull. Another big deal in my eyes. I have a toddler and an infant who I believe were sadistic hairstylists in a previous life.
3. Maintenance. I currently have 1/2- 3/4 of an inch of hair. It takes no time. Pretty self explanatory.
Now, there ARE some downsides. But so far I don't feel like any of them outweigh the pros.<----But that is my personal opinion.
A.  Scab Hair. Huh? Why? Well, after pouring through blog posts and You Tube videos on the matter, I've decided that this is what's happening on my head. Basically scab hair is a consequence from years of relaxing/processing your hair. Who knew? I didn't until after I cut off all of my hair. So at the moment, I cannot determine a texture or curl type. It is DRY.
B. Dryness. This goes hand-in-hand with Scab hair. My hair is attempting to get a job as a stunt double for a Brillo pad. I have literally been moisturizing my hair about 4 times a day, and within an hour it's back to sounding like a pile of dried up leaves. On the plus side, I have my very own floor scrubber.
C. is for CLUELESS. Okay, I did NOT understand how dramatic the change in maintenance would be. While yes, I only have less than an inch of hair, there's a method to caring for it that is NOTHING like caring for relaxed hair. And the best part is that there isn't a clear-cut remedy for my clueless-ness because no one's hair is exactly like anyone else's!! So how am I supposed to copy others when: a. I don't even know who to copy because I don't know my hair texture yet! b. Even if we have similar texture hair, there is no guarantee that the same methods and products will work for me as it did on someone else. Conundrum, much?
These are my observations during the first 48 hours after my BC. I'm sure I'll come up with more as time goes on. Live and Love Naturally!
