Beware the Self-Help Dealers

In the story, Dick Whittington, Whittington comes to London, together with his cat, because he has been told, and naively believes, that the streets are paved with gold, but decides to leave when he finds that they are not.

The same story is being peddled now across the globe and we are addicted.

Millions of us are now hooked to the new drug called “self-help”.

As soon as we have had a fix, we are scouring the net for the next greater high. The problem is that like all drugs there is a comedown and all of them offer the promise of the “highest high” but fail to deliver.

Now I truly believe that you can’t be the “authority” on a subject unless you actually have got the scars to prove it

Yet, this seems to be escaping the, what seems like, hundreds of thousands of people writing out about how to change your life out there.

They all claim that their book will “change your life” and show you how to “do what you love” how many have actually done it?

It goes like this.

You buy the book.

You turn every page, sucking in the information. As you read it, you are saying in your mind “Yes ….. This is it….. The answer to my problem”.

You carry on reading knowing that the answer is only a few pages away. You look forward to the author telling you what they did that was substantial and was an actual product or service.

Yet it never comes. The streets are NOT paved with gold.

I have actually scanned over the last 2-3 self-help books I have read recently to make sure I have not missed anything, to make sure the author hasn’t told me what exactly they have done. But I haven’t.

And this is what really pisses me off with all of these books. THERE IS NO SUBSTANCE.

It seems to be that the authors are convincing themselves (and YOU) that “and like yeah….erm I wrote this book…. The End” is an actual career changing business.

It’s not and more fool me for buying it I guess.

My guess, is that if you removed “writing this book” as the business, we wouldn’t be left with many heroes.

So why do we continue buying into what is a multi-million dollar industry and more importantly who are the real heroes that can tell their stories?
