As little girls we are taught through fairytales that if we dress the part our very own Prince Charming will come and save us. We become addicted to love stories and dress up from a very young age and that somehow tends to follow many of us through life regardless of what our interests are. Science fiction is one of my vices and the love stories in science fiction are just as romantic if not more so than the typical Disney fairytale. They inspire fashion, costumes, and set expectations for every romance that a person experiences (most of which fall short unfortunately).
Here is a list of my favorite sci-fi romances in no particular order.
Buffy and Angel- (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Don’t worry! You can change him! Falling in love with some sort of demonic creature and turning him over to the good side seems to be a common theme these days in romance. I’m pretty sure the Buffy the Vampire Slayer taught me everything I need to know about how to cultivate meaningful and long lasting relationships. It has also inspired some pretty great couple costumes for costume parties. A sexy vampire slayer and her vampire lover? Hot!
John Crichton and Aeryn Sun- (Farscape)
I’m sure most people will agree that John Crichton and Aeryn Sun are the best kissers ever. Examples to prove this can be seen here, here and here. The chemistry between the two is absolutely amazing despite the fact that they aren’t even the same species.
Coheed and Cambria- (Coheed and Cambria)
Even though the story of Coheed and Cambria is derived from a concept band (and a great one at that) the story of the couple and the legacy that they leave behind makes them unforgettable. The two live in a dark version of planet Earth and work to save the universe from evil. Fairly typical plotline, yes, but the storyline coupled with the music is what sets their relationship apart.
Amy and Rory- (Dr. Who)
Ah, the Romeo and Juliet of science fiction. This duo is probably by far my favorite. Anyone who has ever watched Dr. Who loves Amy and Rory. With Amy’s adorable pout face and Rory’s geeky charm, it’s nearly impossible not to. I’m sure most of us know what became of the two. Watching their final moments definitely tugged on my heart strings and they are definitely a couple I will never forget.
Neo and Trinity- (The Matrix)
This one may be fairly obvious but so is the love story between Neo and Trinity. The relationship started out almost as a secret crush that Trinity had on Neo as she started to warm up to him despite his almost amateur and naïve demeanor. They even ended up together in death by the end of the series. Sorry for the spoiler. What makes their relationship such a great love story is how universal it has become. There isn’t single costume party that takes place where a couple doesn’t dress up as Neo and Trinity.
