Be Afraid: Internet and Mobile Dating Experiences

This week, I got into an interesting conversation about online dating. I used online dating off and on until 2012 when I said enough is enough. I found myself thinking that almost everyone you meet in an internet and mobile dating environment is “off their rocker” but I wondered if the same could be said about me since I was on there as well.

When dating apps like Badoo and Tinder came out, I decided to try those. I soon learned that it was the same fishbowl of people. All it takes is one good conversation, and you soon learn why someone is single. I initially got on there because it’s convenient, and you could at least attempt to learn a little something about the person ….easy enough right? So after some strong evaluation of my online dating adventures, Here’s who I met………

The Weirdo
Some people are just plain weird, and you immediately pick up on it. Their profile reads like a normal human being but when you speak in person or on the phone, you realize that the elevator doesn’t quite make it to the top floor.

The Rebounder
People who have recently gone through a breakup or often divorce turn to the internet or a mobile app as a way to find someone to fill the void and take their mind off the failed relationship. You realize this because when you chat on the phone or go on a date, you end up listening to all of the problems they had with an ex. Honestly, it’s the last thing I would want to hear. Yes, everyone needs a shoulder but why me?

The Hustler
This person uses online dating as a way to market his services or scam you. You have a few decent conversations and decide to go out. When you meet they immediately try to sell you services and got the nerve to be persistent about it. In my case, it was prepaid legal services. Did you just ask me for my social security number?

Father Time
It’s nothing worst then a man in the 60+ age range who patrols the dating sites looking for a younger sexual conquest. I think love is possible at any age, but after a certain point you get too old to earn the player of the year award. Enjoy your retirement!

The Pimp
One of my most memorable dates includes a guy I chatted with for about a week. He asked me out, and we decided to meet at Bar Louie. I’m standing outside and BOOM, this guy turns the corner with the meanest pimp walk and the brightest lime green five piece suit; it was 90+ degrees outside. He wasn’t bad at conversation, but he told me he dressed liked that every day because that’s how the old school pimps dressed.

I think the internet and mobile dating is an excellent resource for meeting people, but as with anything else it has its pros and cons, everyone has a different experience. I also feel all of the online and mobile communication is taking away from that face to face interaction that most people like on dates.

What do you think? Please do share your experiences!
