Date: November 14th, 2012

GIS Day (part of Geography Awareness Week) is an annual event that encourages GIS users all over the world to celebrate and share thier geographic technology and talents with students, other businesses, and the public. It plays a major role in promoting geographic awareness and is a way for users of GIS technology to share their real world applications that we all rely on to make our world a better place.

This year DataBC, GeoBC and the Ministry of Education are joining forces to generate GIS educational materials for students, teachers and the general public to help them to better explore the province of British Columbia while learning about the value of GIS at the same time. The educational materials make use of the Province’s extensive geospatial data sets and tools. The educational materials will become available in October and updates will be posted on the following webpage for anyone to use:  http://blog.data.gov.bc.ca/opportunities/2012/09/gis-day-is-november-14-2012/

If you are in B.C. and are interested in holding or sponsoring an event for GIS Day using these educational materials in your classroom, library, or elsewhere, please contact us at [email protected]. We’re excited about the day and look forward to hearing about events planned around the province.
