BATMAN #31 (Zero Year) Review

Posted on the 29 May 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

We are at the final act of Batman Zero Year and it’s time to suit up!  In Savage City part 2, it is now time for Batman to confront The Riddler…and in such style!

I have been waiting for this chapter in the story to get here for too long.  I LOVE this cover of Batman. The team of artists on this book blow me away every issue.  Into the story, Batman, Lucius and Gordon are going to try and figure out where Nygma is hiding at.  It is going to take some time so Batman needs to keep Riddler talking so his broadcast signal stays active.  I was loving the sequence of panels of Bruce making a new costume and grabbing the purple gloves.  The narrative was so perfectly placed in sequence.  Batman will do his best to outsmart The Riddler with a story/riddle while Gordon tries to plant the tracer and Lucius does his thing.  I can tell you that The Riddler wasn’t having any of the nonsense that Batman was throwing at him.  Bats was dropped into the pit which was an old parking garage.  What happened next I thought I would never see in this story.  Apparently he didn’t have a Batspray for this…yet.

I was VERY impressed with this chapter.  From the last book being a bit slow due to the build up of this chapter, Batman #31 let me see the Batman I was looking for.  I know a lot of people that gave up reading this arc.  I am not sure exactly why.  It seems that if a story isn’t action packed every chapter it isn’t good.  I am really enjoying Scott Snyder’s work on this story and the whole Batman run so far.  His work has captivated me and sucked me into the Bat-universe once again.  I didn’t think this particular book was going to end the way it did but it wasn’t bad at all.  I am very excited for what is to come in this Zero Year story.
