Pop cynics like me will roll their eyes when words like “dark” or “raw” are used to describe radio-friendly pop music; and rightly so. But the darkness on “Before I Ever Met You” doesn’t sound forced, and the song isn’t trying every step of the way to convince you of its own edginess. Instead, LA native Banks has crafted a weighty song that feels real and human. Banks’ robust voice never gives you a comfortable amount of space, and she seems to be absolutely thrilled by the agony of this constriction. Sure, this is the kind of song that might be featured in a teaser for new show on USA, but “Before I Ever Met You” is still a perfect alternative to the limpness of radio pop. An ice cold and dub-infused showcase of incredible vocal chops.
