Attention Beauty Lovers. Welcome to the next Beauties On Fire themed link-up. If you don’t know about Beauties on Fire, make sure to check out this post. Our next theme was decided via a Twitter poll. Anyone could vote and our winner was…”Back To School.” Actually, there was a tie for this week’s theme. We decided to do Back To School this week and next week we will be doing the other winner…Retro Looks. All the AMAZING #beautiesonfire members have written posts with their own spin on Back To School.
A popular challenge is going around the YouTube and blogging community. This challenge is the What I Wore In High School beauty challenge. I decided this would be the perfect time to take on this challenge. It goes perfectly with the Back To School theme. I am 26 years old so it has been 8 years (OMGSH) since I have been in high school. I figured I would show you how I did my makeup in HS. I will also include 5 reasons I loved going back to school PLUS 5 lessons my 26-year-old self would have told my HS self. WARNING: There will be A LOT of funny GIFs that you will not want to miss!

Back To School (What I Wore In High School) Beauty Look:
This is totally what I use to look like in high school. This back to school look brought back so many memories of how I used to do my makeup. I was totally obsessed with glitter! I never did my eyebrows, never contoured my face, never applied highlighter, never wore lipstick (only lipgloss), never set my face with a setting spray, and really never used many makeup brushes (it was all about them fingers and sponges). Keep reading to see how I created my famous (totally kidding) high school makeup look. PS: I totally thought I was amazing at makeup back then! I have come such a long way (and still learning).
FACE:
I always did my face first (I now do my eyes first). I totally didn’t highlight or contour my face (I didn’t even know what that was). I also didn’t wear any blush. I thought blush made you look like a clown. Note: I was actually a clown so I shied away from blush. I really didn’t know how to apply blush properly (totally thought you just dot it on the apples of your cheeks). I also did a VERY bad thing. I never wore sunscreen on my face. This is a huge NO NO!
Foundation:
I used the lightest foundation I could find. I usually used liquid foundation and shook it up good before applying. I would dab it on my face and use either my fingers or a sponge (not wet) to blend. I would apply a second layer if I thought I needed it. I was lucky and didn’t have any issues with acne. I would get an occasional hormonal pimple but that was it.
Concealer:
I used a concealer that was similar to my skin tone. I would apply it to any redness that was peaking through and to the occasional pimple. I also tried to conceal any dark circles I had. I just swiped it on (in a straight line) and blended in with my fingers. I totally didn’t know about the triangle method (used for brightening the under eyes) back then.
Powder:
I would set my makeup with a light powder.
Bronzer:
Like I said, I never contoured my face. However, I wanted to look a little more tan (all my best friends were gorgeous tanned girls). I would apply bronzer all over my face in the hope to look a little more tan (it never really worked). I didn’t really have a specific way I applied it. I just swept it all over my face until I felt I had enough.
EYES:
I loved doing my eye makeup (always have). However, I thought that because I have blue eyes that I had to wear blue eyeshadow (HAHA). I would buy every blue eyeshadow I could find. I also was a HUGE fan of glitter. As you will see below, I had to glitterize everything! I was totally OBSESSED! I never used a primer. I didn’t think I needed one because I used a lot of cream products.
My favorite brand of makeup was Victoria Secret. I seriously owned the entire Beauty Rush line. I would save my money for the Semi-Annual sale and spend it all on makeup. I wanted all the blue eyeshadow, glitter, and lipglosses they made.
Eyeshadow:
I would start by applying a white shimmery eyeshadow to the brow bone. I would use my fingers or the sponge applicator that came with the eyeshadow. I would then apply a shimmery bright blue eyeshadow to the crease of my eyes. I would blend it in with my fingers. I would finish by applying a shimmery lighter blue shadow to the lid with my finger. I never blended my eyeshadow with brushes.
Eyeliner:
I always used a felt tip liquid eyeliner. I would use black eyeliner and make a small wing. My eyeliner almost never looked the same on both eyes (Let’s be real…this is ridiculously hard to do and I still struggle with it). I sometimes used colored liquid eyeliner in the same manner. Can you guess which color I chose??? Yup, you are right! BLUE!!!
I always topped my eyeliner with gold or silver glitter eyeliner (here starts the glitter obsession). I would simply apply it right on top of the black or colored eyeliner. I finished off the wings with a dot (yes a large plop) of glitter. I have no idea why I did this, but I did it every single day. I loved adding a fake jewel look with a dot of glitter on the ends of my wings.
Mascara:
I usually applied two coats of black mascara. I never curled my lashes with a lash curler. I was actually terrified of them. I also never wore fake lashes and totally didn’t want to even attempt them. I never put mascara on my bottom lashes. Of course, I added a heaping coat of glitter mascara on top of my black mascara because I didn’t have enough glitter already. I wasn’t kidding when I said I was OBSESSED with glitter. I thought the glitter would draw light to my eyes and make them bigger. Little did I know that I was trying to be a character from Twilight.
LIPS:
For my lips, I would apply a gloss. I always carried at least 5 glosses with me at all times. My favorites were Victoria Secret glosses or Bath and Body Works glosses. I think I owned every single gloss these two companies made. The minty ones were my favorite because they felt so cool on the lips.
FINAL TOUCHES:
To finish my look, I would always put my hair up in a ponytail. I have always had long hair and I wanted it out of my face. However, I would take two pieces of my long bangs and keep them out of the ponytail. I thought this looked good and that the hair framed my face. I now look back and laugh so hard! This look did nothing for my face AT ALL! I would then take pictures on my camera flip phone (I know you all know what I am talking about…HAHA). I would rock that duck face and totally thought I was being seductive and that all the guys would want me. HAHA…OH ELISABETH!!
What do you think of my high school makeup look? Can you relate to any of this? What did you wear in high school? Let me know in the comments below. Recreating this look has brought back so many memories.
5 Reasons I Loved Going Back To School:
1.) Back To School Supplies
I loved picking out new fun school supplies. Even if I never used them all, I always had to have a ton of fun school supplies. I loved everything glitter!! All my notebooks, binders, and pencils would be totally glittery and girlie. I also loved picking out locker accessories. I totally wanted my locker to be the best!
2.) Back To School Clothes
I loved getting new clothes (most girls do). I loved picking out fall and winter clothing because I loved to hide under my clothes. I wasn’t very confident and loved baggy clothing. I would always wear sweatpants or jeans and a t-shirt. I totally cared about my makeup, but I didn’t care about my clothing. I would wear sweaters in the summer too. I was so happy when fall rolled around because I wouldn’t be cooking underneath all the baggy clothing.
3.) Studying
I was (and still am) a total nerd. I LOVED to study. Yes, you totally heard me right. I loved to study and would constantly be studying. I wanted to be a doctor and only wanted A’s. I had straight A’s all my middle school and high school life. I was the kid everyone wanted for group projects because they knew they would get an A. They also knew I would do all the work because I wanted that A.
4.) New Teachers
I was totally the teacher’s pet. I loved to impress the teachers and get on their good side. I was a good girl (especially in middle school and beginning of high school) and the teachers loved my work ethic. I wanted to see how many awards I could get each year and this became a competition to me.
5.) Christmas Was Coming Soon
Back to school meant that Christmas was just around the corner. I love everything about Christmas and couldn’t wait until that day came. I would totally count the days. Christmas also meant snow and snow meant SNOW DAYS. Another thing I loved so much!

1.) Boys Come and Go! Don’t Focus On Boys!
The right boy will come along at the right time. Don’t waste time and energy on trying to find a boyfriend.
As I got older, impressing boys became so important to me. I almost always had a boyfriend from the time I was 17 to the time I was 21. I wasted so much time and tears on them. I wish I would have just waited and focused on more important things in life…like making life long friends and enjoying life. I was so worried what boys thought about me and wanting them to like me. It was actually such a waste of time and pretty pathetic now that I think back. The right boy will come along at the right time. Don’t waste time and energy on trying to find a boyfriend. Enjoy your young life! Which brings me to my next point.

2.) Enjoy Every Moment Of Your High School Life
Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took forgranted the slow time.
I was so wrapped up in boys and grades that I didn’t enjoy much of my high school life. Of course, I did fun things and had awesome friends. However, I didn’t do as much as I could have. I wanted to grow up so bad and move away. Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took for granted the slow time. The older I get the faster time moves. When I was in high school, it felt like a year lasted forever. Today, I blink and a year is over. I miss those days where time seemed to stand still.
Looking back, I wish I would have enjoyed my high school life. I took for granted the slow time.

3.) Dreams Change
Take the time to explore other careers and learn more about the things you love!
All I wanted was to be a doctor and nothing was going to stop me. I spent countless hours studying and trying to be perfect. I wouldn’t listen to advice and just wanted to accomplish my dreams my way. I didn’t think I could be anything besides a doctor. I wish I would have explored more possibilities for my life instead of just focusing on one. I am doing that now that I am 26! Becoming a doctor was not what I thought it was going to be. The medical field is drastically changing and I am not sure I want to be a part of that change. My dreams are also changing and I wish I would have been okay with that at 16. It would have saved me quite a bit of pain. I wish I would have taken the time to explore other careers and learn more about the things I love (like makeup and writing).

4.) My Parents Are Awesome
I wanted to move away so bad and when I finally did…all I wanted to do was move back home.
I wasn’t very close to my parents in high school. I spent many of my high school years fighting and arguing with my parents. They were protective (and for good reason). I would always tell them that I am 16 and can do what I want. That is such an immature thing to say. Now that I have been in the “real” world, I would be perfectly okay with not knowing everything I know now. I now see that my parents were just protecting me because they loved me. Life is short and you never know when it will be your last day with those that you love. Never take that for granted. My parents really did want what was best for me and they did an amazing job raising me. I wish I would have respected them more and enjoyed my time with them. I wanted to move away so bad and when I finally did…all I wanted to do was move back home.
5.) Life is an Adventure…Give More Than You Receive
Your focus should be on giving more than you receive. Giving to others will bring joy into your life. Give of your time and resources.
Life truly is an adventure. You really don’t know what lies around the corner or what will happen tomorrow. Take every day one day at a time and enjoy every minute. Do something you love every day. Your focus should be on giving more than you receive. Giving to others will bring joy into your life. Give of your time and resources. Have fun and laugh a little every single day. I wish I would have know these things when I was 16. You can never get your high school days back. If you are in high school now, enjoy every minute of it!
Your focus should be on giving more than you receive. Giving to others will bring joy into your life.
