AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON – Ultron’s Origin Revealed

Ultron’s origin has been revealed within the same Entertainment Weekly that gives us our first look at the titular villain.

In the comics, Ultron was created by Hank Pym/Ant-Man, but clearly that needs to be changed to fit in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his origin has been altered to what most had assumed, and he will now be created by Tony Stark.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers are basically burnt out.  They’re tired and need a break after protecting the world from horrors after the dissolution of SHIELD.  To do this Tony Stark invents a new self-aware, self-teaching, A.I. super-being to help assess and deal with threats, along with leading his Iron Legion of drones.  The problem is, he imbues Ultron with aspects of his own personality, and the A.I. chooses to focus on Stark’s cynicism and ignore his sympathy.  Thus, Ultron is born.  However he lacks that human emotion, and he quickly determines to save life on Earth, he must remove the biggest problem, that being human beings.  “Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, ‘Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better,’” said director Joss Whedon. “He’s not just going ‘Muhaha, soon I’ll rule!’”
