Doesn’t this feel nice? W.B. just made a big casting announcement for its DC Cinematic Universe, and instead of inspiring eye-rolling or hand-wringing it instead engenders nothing but good will.
J.K. Simmons is the new Commissioner Gordon, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will appear in Justice League: Part 1, which begins filming in mid-April and comes out Nov. 17, 2017.
Second: I guess this means an end to all those petitions for Simmons to play J. Jonah Jameson again in the new Spider-Man movie.
Third: This is a solid casting choice. It’s really WB/DC’s gain and Marvel’s loss. Simmons put in his time as the scene-stealing Jameson, and now he should help us move from Gary Oldman as the new Commissioner Gordon.
Sidenote: What’s that you’re saying about Ben McKenzie? Never heard of him. Gotham – what’s that? Nope, the last live action James Gordon was Gary Oldman. Everyone knows that.
Sidenote to my Sidenote: Come on, man. Try to keep this positive. No need to throw Gotham under the bus. Some people really like that show.
Anyway, I’d like to enter into evidence: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg and Jared Leto (and maybe also Jason Mamoa and Margot Robbie). Not necessarily all bad choices for the roles they were picked for. We haven’t seen Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad yet. Plus, the push back was possibly unfair to begin with. However, the DC movies have continually faced uproar over the casting decisions, and in Ezra Miller’s case as The Flash it’s more about wishing he was Grant Gustin instead. It’s nice that in this one instance, at least, they’ve made a decision that’s not only unobjectionable but praise-worthy.*
* What about Jeremy Irons as Alfred? Or all those other random Suicide Squad people whose characters were too obscure to truly inspire any kind of outrage on the level of Batfleck?
