At Least It’s Not Hot and Sunny!

At Least It's Not Hot and Sunny

He’s going to have to learn to shovel faster or he might get buried under the new snowfall before he gets the old stuff cleaned up!

It sounds crazy to say, when we are in the midst of such a harsh winter, but I truly love the seasons.  I grew up in Michigan and, after college, I moved to Arizona. For the first year it was amazing. I wrote home and said, “Haha! You’re all frozen solid and I went swimming today!”

The second year I called my family in March and said, “Oh, dear! You had to shovel snow? I just went for a long walk in the 78 degree sunshine.”

The third year I thought, “Gee. It really would be nice to have a white Christmas.”

Eight years and a significant number of sunburns later I was pretty sure that one more hot and sunny day without a break was going to push me over the edge. All I wanted in the whole world was to get into my car without burning my butt on the seatbelt buckle and then drive without squinting against the brightness of that ever-lasting ball of fire in the sky.

I came back to Michigan on a cold, rainy day in November and spent the whole afternoon playing at the park with my family. It was one of the best days of my life.

So now I can’t complain about the winter.  OK… maybe I’ve complained a little on the days when it was 25 degrees below zero or 32 degrees and raining icy-cold snot (if you’ve never experienced snrain at that temperature there really isn’t any other word to describe it).  But… other than that… I’m willing to accept that this is what winter means when you live in a place that has seasons.  And, as Percy Bysshe Shelley said, “O wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind?”

With the knowledge that spring really isn’t so far away my soul is starting to long for the smell of fresh-turned earth and the feel of cool grass under my bare feet.  I think this is manifesting in my obsessive reading about gardening and homesteading.

Here are a few of my favorites from the past couple of weeks.  I have a feeling you will love them, too.

“Pocket Farm Tour” at Homestead Lady

“Gearing Up For Spring Planting” at Black Fox Homestead

Why I decided Not To Become Amish and a Simple Lifestyle Challenge” at Plain and Not So Plain

“Living off the Beaten Path: Laundry” at Hullabaloo Homestead

“Live in Harmony With the Seasons” at Black Fox Homestead

“Homestead Tips on Tuesday: Maple Syrup” at The (mis)Advetures of a “Born Again” Farm Girl
