Are We out of the Woods Yet?

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

For the last 26 years, with the exception of a week-long stint in eighth grade that does not count, I’ve been single.  I’ve been in love, but it was unrequited and a disaster (you can read about it HERE and HERE), and somehow, being a writer and a reader and a lover of good TV and film, I feel like I know what it means to be in love.

I don’t really, though.

That’s not to say that I don’t know how it feels to be loved.  There are a lot of amazing people in my life who love me.  I’ve just never felt romantic love.

Maybe you haven’t either.  It can be incredibly hard to be someone who is single and has always been single and be surrounded by people who are in love.  Or who aren’t but who know what that feels like.  I know how hard that is.  You’re not alone.

I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift’s “Out Of The Woods” all day. (Sidenote: SUPER ready for “1989” to come out.)

Often I listen to songs and I really like the beat or the way the music sounds, but they don’t really make sense.  In general, of course, they do.  And as a reader and a writer with an imagination, I can imagine what those songs might mean if I had been in a relationship, but I don’t actually know how they feel.

A TV show once told me that you knew you were in love when all of the songs made sense.

They don’t make sense yet, but I know that one day they will.

And if they will make sense for me, they will make sense for you.  If you, like me, have had moments where you’re worried you’ll never fall in love – have faith.  Keep loving yourself.  The person who is supposed to love you is waiting for you, I know it.

One day you’ll be pushing furniture out of the way to dance with your partner in the living room and you’ll remember this song.  You’ll remember reading this post, maybe, and you’ll think about how “Out Of The Woods” maybe meant something different for you.  Maybe your partner will pull you in to dance, and you’ll realize that you’re finally out of the woods.  No matter where that relationship goes, you found the clearing, so you just have to keep going.

If you’re in the woods now, don’t worry.  The clearing is coming.
