Are Fish Oil Supplements Good for the Skin

Jennifer Lopez says, “Beauty is only skin deep. I think what’s really important is finding a balance of mind, body, and spirit.” Good skin texture is important to look beautiful and radiant. Skin texture and tone are the main qualities of a good skin. Many people have wrinkles and acne on their skin. It is important to eat healthy and nutritious food to keep the skin healthy.

Omega-3 is good for the skin, which contains fatty acids; this is primarily found in fish. A person who does not eat fish can opt for fish supplements. If we study in detail, fish oil has two main forms of Omega-3 fatty acids. They are Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). The Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) handles the operation of the brain and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) helps the skin by controlling the oil formation. The oil formation processes maintain moisture in the skin, stop acne, and postpones the skin maturing process. The EPA also protects the skin from the sun damage and help repair it as it is an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agent. Many people don’t get sufficient Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. The best sources of fish oil are tuna, herring, salmon, mackerel, and anchovies, etc., which should be boiled or baked to get best health effects. However, sometimes it is not possible to consume these fishes, hence fish oil supplement plays a vital role. The fish oil supplement comes in liquid or capsule form. However, it should have 120 milligrams of DHA and 180 milligrams of EPA. It should be consumed daily three times with each meal. This means three capsules per day are required for the human body to maintain the level of Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil supplements also provide vitamins to the body and skin.

As per the research, a lack of fatty acids, Omega-3, is found in most of the people staying in North America region. These people are more prone to skin diseases like eczema, acne, psoriasis, and dry skin. The maximum amount of moisture loss happens if the skin does not get sufficient fatty acids causing in excess dryness. A Polyunsaturated fatty acid, which is found in fish oil is also beneficial for the hair as per dermatologists. This fatty acid improves hair quality and density, it decreases hair loss and play a key role in keeping the hair healthy.

In many countries, the most common cancer found in people is skin cancer, which is caused due to excess exposure of skin to UV rays. The UV rays decay the skin and weakens the immune system, the UV rays also multiplies the cancer cells and initiates tumor. Fish oils safeguard the skin against UV radiation and hence reduce the risk of skin cancer. Scientific research proves that sufficient quantity of eicosapentaenoic acid prevents skin cancer. A doctor or a dietician should be consulted before consuming fish oil supplements as it might trigger reverse affects with some other medications or health conditions.
