Applesauce – Simply Homemade

By Nutrisavvy

Applesauce is one of those conveniences you can buy at the market. But when you’ve got plenty of apples and just don’t feel like heading to the store, why not make it yourself?!

Homemadeapplesauce

Homemade applesauce in recycled jam jar.

It’s simple:

  • 3-4 apples (you can use any variety: I mixed Granny Smith and Fuji)
  • Water (enough to cover about an inch at the bottom of a pot)
  • 1-2 Tbsp of fresh lemon juice
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • (Recycle a jam jar as seen in pic above to store your sauce)

Peel and slice 3-4 apples. In a pot add a little water and then the apples. Heat on stove (medium heat) until apples are soft. Toss soft/warm apple slices and any remaining liquid to food processor. Start processing. Add in 1-2 Tbsp of fresh lemon juice and cinnamon to taste. Enjoy warm or let cool and refrigerate.

Applesauce is great served alone, as a garnish and to replace some of the fat in your baked goods. I enjoy it warm or cold, alone; atop potato- or veggie/rice- pancakes; served warm over waffles; and as a fat replacer in my baked goods to lower the fat/calories in my treats.

Q: How do you enjoy applesauce?
