An Adventurous Spirit: Ways to Save a Bit on the Road
Travel and going on holiday are really two different things in certain ways. On the one hand, you could argue that going on holiday is simply about kicking back and relaxing, yet on the other hand, travel is about experiencing culture and really getting your hands dirty exploring. But whatever your choice, there are some simple ways you can find to cut costs both before and during your trip.
Real travel adventures don’t come cheap unless you really know what you are doing, so it pays to save money wherever possible, be it staying at slightly less upmarket hotels, or cutting travel costs. A good way to do just that is to say ‘no’ to expensive taxis and public transport, and instead opt to drive yourself to the airport. We regularly do this nowadays, and book airport parking through places like Airparks. You don’t have to be flying from a major airport to do this either, as you’ll find facilities at most regional airports too, including great value facilities for Leeds Bradford Airport parking.
.
We fly in and out of LAX a lot, and have found some awesome deals which allow us to simple drive into the airport, leave our car and jump on the plane. Its the little things before you get on the plane that make the big difference.
If you can save on the small areas of your travel plans, then you can experience more on your time away. If, like we touched on before, you’re more into getting out and about, then you’ll find a spot of research prior to your travels will help you no end. If however you’re a little adventure shy, or this is your first attempt at doing more than just the general tourist route, then head to some online forums and read other people’s suggestions. The Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum is an excellent source or information by some of the most experienced and seasoned travelers in the world. We have found answers there to questions we were sure no one had asked before.
Maybe a guided tour could be the way forward for a first time adventurer, and there are many companies out there that will put together a bespoke package according to your needs. We have gone on some amazing tours around the world, from Thai cooking classes in Chiang Mai to exploring the Israeli desert. Adventure doesn’t have to be about climbing Kilimanjaro, it can simply be heading to the next town and having a look around via a public bus or by simply strapping on your shoes and heading out on foot.
Adventure is what you make it, and you don’t have to venture too far out of your comfort zone if you don’t want to.Of course, regardless of what kind of trip you’re going on, being culturally aware is very important. Read up before you go so you’re one step ahead, and always dress appropriately for the place you’re going. A good tip is also to learn a few words of the local language, just to throw in there if you feel confident enough. The locals will always appreciate this, and will be more inclined to help you, if you show a little interest in their daily life etc.
The world is a huge place, and it begs to be explored. Regardless of how you choose to do it, get out there, experience it, and breathe it in.
