I couldn't help but think of all the controversy about the America's Cup race abandoning traditional 12-meter monohulls for 72-foot wing-sail catamarans when I checked out the America's Cup Speed Trials app. Remember the rationale offered by the BMW Oracle team? For the Facebook generation, fast catamarans that pitchpole and capsize would bring a new level of excitement to the sport. So I downloaded their race simulation app anticipating, at minimum, the kind of "Facebook-generation excitement" any young player would expect from a game app. Yawn. Yawn again - even for an old monohull-traditionalist like myself. If the "Speed Trials" is in any way a harbinger of the 2013 Am-Cup races in San Francisco, it portends an even sadder day for sailing than some already expect.
