The Washington Post reports that a recent poll indicates 46% of Americans don’t care which party controls Congress.
Meanwhile, Fox News reports that in its latest poll 16% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing.
3 Questions That Arise From This Story
1. Isn’t this like saying you don’t like your car because the motor shuts down every few years, but then buying the same brand of vehicle because it’s the brand advertised during your favorite sporting events? (Answer: no, when your car breaks down, it doesn’t take down the global economy with it.)
2. Why don’t these surveys have follow up questions like: “What do you think Congress is doing?” We’d be interested in knowing what they do. For example, if there is some funny video on YouTube of Michelle Bachmann singing her state song “Hail Minnesota,” then maybe that explains why some of the 16 percent approve of what Congress is doing. Just not the 16 percent who had hail dent their broken-down cars, as since Michelle Bachmann doesn’t believe in climate change, her singing obviously controls the weather.
3. Isn’t not doing anything the reason that so many laws don’t change, even if the majority of the population wants to see them change? Perhaps it’s time that the percentage of Americans who approve of Congress switch bodies with those Americans who support sensible changes in the law, just like Matthew Perry and Zac Efron in the movie 17 Again. And remember, in this body-switching scenario, those who approve of Congress are only 17, so many of them will be too young to vote the incumbents back in this November. Win-win!
