The age of new internet domain names is truly upon us as new top level domains are up for auction – and Amazon appears to be the first big name retailer to splash the cash on what it sees as a must-have.

The ecommerce giant just spent $4.6 million on the TLD “.buy” – quite understandably! What is perhaps surprising is that Amazon beat off Google (and two other companies according to TheNextWeb) in the auction. That’s some buying power.

That’s not the largest amount spent on a TLD though. According to domainnamewire.com, who track everything domain name related, “.tech” has been bought for an amazing $6.76 million – though they haven’t disclosed who by. Could be Google, could be Apple, it wasn’t TechDrink!

As the TLD and domain name wars hot up over the coming months and years expect that figure to be smashed though.
