All-round Moises Henriques Set up Win for Sydney Sixers

Moises Henriques scored unbeaten 49 off 22 balls

Moises Henriques shone with both bat and ball as Sydney Sixers beat Chennai Super Kings by 14 runs in their opening match of Champions League Twenty20 at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Portugal-born Australia all-rounder hit a blistering unbeaten 22-ball 49 before scalping 3-23 as setting a formidable target of 186, Sydney Sixers restricted Chennai to 171-9.

Reaching to 136-4 in 16 overs thanks to 61-run second wicket between Faf du Plessis (43 off 25) and Michael Hussey (16) and then the 55-run stand for the fourth wicket between Suresh Raina (57 off 33) and Subramaniam Badrinath (6), Chennai were desperately marching towards the target but an outstanding fielding display from the Australian side halted their momentum.

Moises Henriques removed dangerous Raina, who hit eight boundaries and two sixes in his blistering vigil, and skipper MS Dhoni (8) in the same over. He earlier had claimed Badrinath (6).

Left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc, who had dealt Chennai an early blow by plunking the stumps of opener Murali Vijay (1), ripped through the Ravichandran Ashwin (18) and for Yo Mahesh (2) in the final over to finish with 3-31.

Earlier, Moises Henriques, who walk off in the 14thover at number sixth position, switched on a show of power hitting and, sharing a blazing 75-run seventh-wicket stand with Steven Smith (26 off 17), propelled Sydney Sixers to 185-5.

Moises Henriques’ whirlwind knock was laced with five boundaries and three sixes.

Openers Shane Watson (46 off 30) and Michael Lumb (18) laid the foundations of a competitive target by delivering a quick-fire 50-run opening stand.

Lumb was snared leg-before off spinner Ravindra Jadeja in 7th over while Watson, who hit five boundaries and two sixes, was run-out consequent to mix-up with Nic Maddinson (12).

Wicketkeeper batsman Brad Haddin scored 18 runs off 11 balls before perishing to Aswhin in 14th over.
