All Italy Sings in February with the Festival Di San Remo

Are you ready? As every year the  February appointment has come - this is followed by many Italians. Ladies and gentlemen the festival of San Remo.
This event is now in the history of our country. The Festival of San Remo is the father of all the Italian talent show that crow today the television networks. Since the Fifties - first in radio and then on television- the Festival of San Remo catches the attention and the audience for about a week each year.
If you are interested or not in this festival, anyway you  will still listen what is happening, because -  in addition to all songs presented in the program – there is an intense activity all around the festival that  fills the  tabloid and the newspapers with news about the protagonists. All the Italy speak about the Festival and everywhere: at the barber, at the hairdresser,  in the bar, on the bus. This festival has accompanied the history of Italians, going from the love songs of the first years to the most serious  social topics in the 70s, until the influences of the songs overseas. Towards the 80s were even accepted the songs in a foreign language sung by the national singers. What about the look of the singers copied by the Italians? The festival of San Remo is a real phenomenon.
On stage of the historic Teatro Aristonhave passed  some great singers and famous Italian authors (Mogol is definitely one of the famous authors in our historical context singing). The festival is a piece of  the Italian history. It is a phenomenon because –in my opinion- the story of a nation is not just a series of the dates and the political events, but also a complexity  of customs and traditions in transformation.

The charming town of San Remo, home of  the flowers, is filled with VIPS, groupies, red carpets for once a year. The preparations are fervent and the stage of the Ariston has  a multitude of colours. The criticisms of the festival can not miss in a country full of  grumbling people as Italy - it could be strange the contrary. Anyway "You can speak good or bad, it is important to talk about it". The great success of this festival has always been public. It seems that the event was born in the complete indifference, and thanks to the Italian audience – that came out of the Second World War and needed some leisure time-  became a mass phenomenon.
Nilla Pizzi (that your Italian parents or grandparents know) was the first winner of the festival, and she  won for two years., the festival became popular in Italy in  1953 with a television experiment and it began famous abroad. An important rule of the festival? The songs must be absolutely unpublished: the first great expulsion for one song was in 1957 because the song was already published! What singing walkway was the festival of San Remo! There have been some great names as Mina, Claudio Villa and  Modugno, but the list is very long and abundant. At the end of the 50s the festival of San Remo was broadcast in Eurovision, it was an important television event! Gino Paoli and “ Le mille bolle blu” of Mina came in festival in  the 1961. Their presence, however, was not aired on television because they were not singers. To conclude our pan on the early years of this festival I remember the stories told by my grandmother about the year 1963: there was a scandal! The age of love songs was over and the “urlatori” ( called the screamers because of the way of  singing) (Mina, Celentano, Morandi, Milva etc etc) had conquered the scenes. That year Mina was pregnant by a man to whom she was not married. The news today is irrelevant, but not in those years! How could anyone think of an event so outrageous? This news troubled all the orthodox and it gave the occasion to talk and comment the festival that year. See? For one reason or another the festival of San Remo has never passed on the sly! So if you are fan of the genre, watch Rai in these days... and the show must go on!
Siete pronti? Come ogni anno è arrivato l’appuntamento di febbraio che da  anni viene seguito con  attenzione da molti italiani: signori e signore ecco a  voi il festival di San Remo. Questa manifestazione è entrata oramai nella storia del nostro paese. Il Festival di San Remo è il padre italiano di tutti quei talent show che affollano oggi le reti  televisive. Sin dagli anni cinquanta, prima nelle radio e poi in televisione , il festival di San Remo cattura l’attenzione e l’audience per circa una settimana all’anno. Che uno possa essere più o meno interessato all’evento, verrà comunque  a sapere che cosa succede, perché oltre alle canzoni presentate  vi è tutto un’intensa attività che riempie giornali più o meno scandalistici  con notizie  sui protagonisti del  festival.  Si parla in tutta Italia ed ovunque: barbiere, parrucchiere, bar, sull’autobus. Questo festival ha accompagnato la storia degli italiani passando da canzoni d’amore dei primi tempi a testi più impegnati degli anni ’70, fino alle influenze delle canzoni oltre oceano. Verso gli anni ’80 erano addirittura accettate  canzoni in lingua straniera cantate da cantanti nazionali. Volgiamo poi parlare dei look dei cantanti copiati dagli italiani? Il festival di San Remo è un vero e proprio fenomeno di costume. Sul palco dell’ormai storico teatro Ariston, sono passati nomi di grandi cantanti e altrettanto famosi autori italiani ( Mogol è sicuramente uno degli autori  storici nel nostro ambito canoro). Il festival è un pezzo di storia italiana: è un fenomeno di costume perché, per come la vedo io,  la storia di un paese non è solo una serie di date e di eventi politici, ma anche una complessità in divenire di  usi e costumi. La ridente cittadina di San remo, patria dei fiori, si riempie di star, di fan, di tappeti rossi per una volta all’anno. I preparativi sono fervidi e il palco dell’Ariston prende vita in una moltitudine di colori. Non possono mancare le critiche al festival, ma in un paese di brontoloni come l’Italia sarebbe strano non averne. In ogni caso :“ Che se ne parli bene o male l’importante è parlarne!” Il grande successo di questo festival è sempre stato il pubblico. Pare che la manifestazione sia nata nella più completa indifferenza e proprio grazie al pubblico, che usciva dalla seconda guerra mondiale ed aveva bisogno anche di momenti di svago , divenne un fenomeno di massa. Nilla Pizzi ( che i vostri genitori o nonni italiani conosceranno) fu la prima vincitrice del festival e lo vinse per ben due anni di seguito. Sarà nel ’53, con un esperimento televisivo, che il festival divenne popolare in Italia e incominciò ad esser conosciuto anche all’estero. Regola inderogabile del festival? Le canzoni devono essere assolutamente inedite: la prima grande esclusione di una canzone avvenne nel 1957 proprio perché il brano non era inedito! Che passerella canora è stato il festival di San Remo! Grandissimi nomi da Mina a Claudio Villa a Modugno, ma la lista è veramente lunga e copiosa. Alla fine degli anni ’50 il festival di San remo era trasmesso in eurovisione, quindi pensate a come potesse essere importante!

L’anno 1961 vide arrivare Gino Paoli e le mille bolle blu di Mina.  Solo l’anno dopo furono aggiunti al festival due attori per gestire degli intermezzi non canori:  Tognazzi e Vianello. Le loro presenze non furono però mandate in onda in televisione perché non erano cantanti.  Per concludere la nostra carrellata sui primi anni di questa manifestazione ricordo i racconti di mia nonna sul 1963: che anno di scandali! L’epoca delle canzoni melodiche era finita e gli urlatori ( Mina, Celentano, Morandi, Milva etc etc) avevano conquistato le scene. Proprio quell’anno Mina  aspettava un figlio da un uomo a cui non era sposata. La notizia oggi non ci fa né caldo né freddo, ma pensate in quegli anni! Come si poteva pensare un evento così scandaloso? La cosa turbò tutti i ben pensati e diede comunque modo di parlare e commentare a lungo il festival di quell’anno . Vedete? Per un motivo o l’altro il festival di San Remo non è mai passato in sordina! Quindi, se siete amanti del genere, sintonizzatevi in questi giorni sulla Rai e …lo spettacolo continua!
