I’m relatively new to Alex + Ada and I have absolutely fallen in love with this book. I started reading it when ComiXology had their Image promotion where all #1 issues were free. After reading the first issue I was hooked and just kept reading until I had caught up.
If you haven’t been reading, here is the super quick catch up. Alex is a lonely guy that is given a robot by his Grandmother. That robot is Ada but she’s less “Danger Will Robinson” and more Stepford Wives. He finds out that you can hack them to give them personality and now they are figuring out how to help her experience her new “life”.
Issue #7 shows us Ada realizing that she can’t do the things that normal humans can do. There is a fear that humans have of robots after several high profile events where robots injured or even killed humans. Just walking outside to work in the yard sets off a series of events that take all of Alex and Ada’s plans and turns them upside down. That paranoia isn’t restricted to just the neighborhood and things are set in motion that makes Alex’s recent choices putting him at odds with the law.
The thing that won me over about this title is the relationship that is developing between the two main characters. They address the fact that many humans use the robots just for sex, but Alex is treating Ada as something more than just a possession. He wants to do what is best for Ada, not what is best for him. It’s an interesting dynamic that has many potential complications as Alex has to do some questionable things to get Ada to where she is now.
Alex + Ada is a relationship drama for a new era that once again shows us that love comes in many different forms. Highly recommended.
