Vincent Black ShadowAs a boy, there was one particular book in my father’s 'motorcycle library' which I used to pore over at length- ‘Classic Motorbikes’ (1977) by fellow Sydneysider Alan Puckett and photographer Warren Penney. It wasn’t the text of the book which interested me so much as the illustrations of beautiful Manx’s and Matchy G50s, Indians and even a NSU Sportmax! I started copying the paintings- eventually achieving sweet bike-drawing skills which I marvelled the kids at school with. Now working as an industrial designer, its often necessary to draw chrome; not an easy task at times, however this book taught me everything I needed to know.
The illustrations shown here are just snapshots of the full drawings found in ‘Classic Motorbikes’. I found them at Alan Pucketts website. There was a provision to buy prints of the drawings however Alan Puckett sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 86 so I'm not sure of the option is still available. If anybody out there knows who to contact in regards to getting hold of prints or the book (its now out of print)- our phone lines are open. If you want to know more about the book or see some scanned in pages have a look here.
