So last night I took in my 2nd show at the Rose Theatre, nestled in heart of downtown Brampton. This time around it wasn't a country act that caught my eye it was a young lad from Petty Harbour, Newfoundland that brought his brand of pop/rock to the Rose for the first time. Alan Doyle is currently on tour supporting his latest release So Let's Go and I can tell you from the minute Alan stepped foot on the stage it was a night that most will rave about for decades to come... OK, OK, maybe not decades its not like Alan rode in on a Lion like his counterpart last evening performing at the Superbowl, Katy Perry.
Mr. Doyle stepped onto the stage with just his voice to kick off one of the best kitchen parties I have ever attended. For those not familar with the body of work of one Mr. Alan Thomas Doyle here is a quick recap. Alan was one of the founding members of legendary Canadian pop/rock band Great Big Sea. He also has numerous acting credits to his name and recently added author to the mix. Now the acting credits is something I have to say he definatley takes into his live performances. This fella sure has the gift of gab, as you will learn later this week in our interview with Alan before the show last night. If you came to see a guy play song after song with ZERO audience interatcion then you came to the wrong show. Now, I ain't talking Brad Paisley get out in the crowd and take a bunch of selfies interaction. But Alan does have some pretty smart and entertaining humor wrapped up in his show.
So it was shortly after 8pm and the snow had just started in the GTA, when Alan took the stage to greet his audience and sing an incredible acapella Dream of Home which was just mesmerizing to get our attention. The band filled in to play an unforgettable performance of foot stomping, hand clappin' tunes. Now having grown up with Great Big Sea playing the soundtrack to my college years, I already knew that Alan Doyle was one hell of a singer. But tonight it was something different. It was the passion in songs such as Laying Down to Perish which is on his current album and my personal favorite of the night 1,2,3,4 which is also on the new release. It's not often I go to a concert and find a NEW song taking the highlight of the night spot.
The night was full of absolutely amazing music with a band that has some crazy talent with an accordion being passed around from guitar player to pianist and the Super Girl of the night playing fiddle, guitar and tambourine was damn well impressive! I could review song by song but with 27 songs on the set list I am not sure you would have the time to read about how great it was. I would rather you take in a performance on one of his final tour dates before he leaves Ontario. There are only three left so if your in Hamilton (Feb 3rd) London (Feb 4) or Toronto (Feb 6) you won't want to miss your chance to see a true entertainer. And if you reading this from anywhere else in Canada or the US. the dates are posted on the link below. So as the title track states So Let's Go!
I want to thank Trish for all the amazing photos from last nights performance hard to get that real killer shot from sitting back in your seat but ya did a great job. The final 2 below were taken by yours truly .
Watch for our interview with the very personable Alan Doyle later this week!
