Al Meshwar Restaurant, Fujairah – Of Stoned Interiors and Food.

By Tasneem Rajkotwala @tasu0704

As our one-day road trip to Fujairah was coming to an end, we decided to dine at Al Meshwar restaurant located on the main street adjacent to Fujairah Tower, previously researched on google! We seemed to be little lost on our way while coming from Khorfakkan beach but the attendant on the other side of the phone was ditto clear in his explanation for directions, all the way till husband drove us to the restaurant.

Just when we got down from our car, the outside structure of the restaurant’s building represented the distinctive architecture Fujairah is known for. Exquisite stoned walls, traditional designs, yellow lights and a lot like what I watched in Flintstones during my childhood.

We were greeted by a very welcoming staff on the ground floor area with open juice bar right opposite to the entrance and guided to the Level One for family sitting.

Ground floor caters to sheesha lovers and with a kid it was appropriate we took a lift to the other non smoking areas of the building. The restaurant in all has four levels and an outdoor terrace for dining and cafe. The first floor where we took our table had good old style general sitting, family sections and private rooms.

The restaurant was buzzing with people on occasion of Eid and holidays but still the place looked calm and comforting. The menu was quite extensive just like in any Lebanese restaurant but we stuck to very simple stuff from a long and tiring day –  Beiruti Hummus, Meat Arayees, Chicken Seekh Kebab and Cheese Manakeesh. I had few moments of fizzle when we were told by our server that our main meal of kebab and arayees will take around 30-40 minutes to come on our table because I was hungry and longing to be back home; but was pleasantly amazed when it took even less time than what we expected.

Beiruti hummus was traditionally prepared with chickpeas, parsley and garlic but had a slight twist to it. A modest drizzle of sweet barbecue sauce made all the difference from the regular hummus that we have been eating all this while. It definitely was a good surprise!

Chicken seekh kebab stood for it’s standard taste and was all gulped down within the minutes it landed in front of our eyes with fries and charred tomatoes.

Meat arayees is a popular Lebanese meat stuffed pitas that came in fresh, crispy and perfectly smoked with lovely Arabic flavors in the inside.

Only disappointment in the whole meal was the absence of fresh bread; only because the crowd was gathering in moderately high numbers than on any regular day on account of holidays was no excuse for serving pre-packed pita breads with hummus. But it was totally passable. Now, the star of the evening was special Al Meshwar cockatail that had juices of mango and strawberry layered with fruit salad (banana, strawberry, kiwi), ice-cream and a dollop of whipped cream in a humongous glass. And when you have just a serving of this, there isn’t an inch of the space left for a dessert to fit in. Seriously!

When you are out and about in Fujairah, Al Meshwar is the place to be to satiate your hunger pangs; for its food and soothing ambiance.
