I’ve mentioned Washington Old Hall on my blog before, being a volunteer there I would happily shout from the rooftops to anybody who will listen about how lovely and wonderful and amazing it is, but recently I went there for a spot of relaxation rather than to volunteer. At Christmas when I was dressed as an elf giving presents to the children from Santa, I won the raffle and the prize was afternoon tea for two. Obviously at the time it was winter so the weather wasn’t really afternoon tea weather, and the Old Hall closes over winter anyway, so when the weather got nicer me and Alex finally decided to go along and try it out. It was a bit of a running joke actually as every weekend we planned to go, it rained!
When a sunny day finally came along we headed straight over, and what a lovely day it was! It was absolutely red hot, beautiful sunshine, and I couldn’t think of a lovelier place to sit and have afternoon tea. The house itself is such a nice building, and so are the grounds. We sat at the top of some steps on the lawn outside of the house so we had a view of the lovely gardens, and in hindsight I probably should have taken a photo. I wasn’t planning on writing a blog post about it to be honest that’s why the photos are a bit rubbish! The food itself was lovely, we got to choose which three sandwiches we want from a selection of three flavours, and both went for plain chicken and plain cheese. We had a choice of wether we wanted a fruit scone with jam and clotted cream or cheese, I went for cheese and Alex went for sweet… I may have eaten half of his too though! Then a choice of one of their home made cakes, I can’t remember what flavor mine was but Alex’s was banoffee, which I also ate half of. I like cake, what can I say? All of this with a pot of tea, served on the cutest china cups and trays, is only £5.50! I didn’t find this out until a few days later when I went back for my volunteering but I was so shocked, they could easily charge so much more and it’s well worth it. Especially as the team room profits go to the Old Hall anyway :)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Washington Old Hall really is a little hidden gem that most people don’t know exists, so if you’re in the area or even just looking for a new place to visit, I’d definitely recommend going along and sampling some of this wonderful afternoon tea! If you don’t want to go in the house you can look around the grounds and get into the tea room for free, and on a sunny day it’s the perfect place for a stroll around or even a picnic if afternoon tea doesn’t take your fancy!
Also, can we just take a minute to appreciate how hilarious Alex’s giant hands look holding the little milk jug? Him holding the tea cup was even funnier!
