A member of Afghan National Army on Tuesday opened fire at British troops in Helmand, killing one solider and leaving six others injured.
The gunman, about whom the Taliban claim was working for them, was killed in the counter attack by the Afghan army.
“This is an extremely sad day for the Corps of Royal Engineers and everyone serving with Task Force Helmand. Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this time,” spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Laurence Roche, said.
According to British Ministry of Defence, the six solider suffered anecdotal injuries and are not in critical condition.
The incident occurred in Helmand’s Nahr-e Saraj district where the gunman first opened fire at Afghan troops and then on British solider. After shooting the British solider he attempted to flee but the members of Afghan national security forces shot him dead.
