It had been too long since our last adventure.
We hopped on the 1 subway, and rode it downtown until the last stop.
There, we boarded a ferry to take us to Governors Island.
It was a short boat ride. We waved to Staten Island.
Governors Island is half a mile from Manhattan, separated from Brooklyn by the Buttermilk Channel.
It was colonized by the Dutch in 1611, and used as both a fortress and trading post.
It has since served as an Army post and, most recently, belonged to the Coast Guard, who sold it to the State of New York for $1. We came off with a pretty good deal!
The island is now a free public space, open on weekends for one and all.
You can rent bikes and tour historic houses, play miniature golf or just stroll around.
And there is a spectacular view of Manhattan- and the growing Freedom Tower at the site of the World Trade Center.
It was a day for the books!
Or blogs, as it is.
