Evening dress, Chanel, c1932. Photos: Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

On the first day of Christmas, Madame Guillotine gave to me: a Chanel dress in sparkling blue. Hrm, that didn’t flow well AT ALL did it? Ah well. Anyway, for the next twenty five days, I’m going to be unveiling the most gorgeously glamorous and glitzy party dresses known to all humanity every morning as my own countdown to Christmas Day.

Anyway, the first dress is this fabulous shimmering blue sequinned Chanel frock from around 1932, which was presented to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Loelia, Duchess of Westminster. Okay, blue isn’t the most Christmassy of colours but there’s definitely something very ice maiden like about this dress – I can imagine sauntering into a party wearing this (although it’d be a struggle as it has a 33in bust!) and standing framed for a moment in the doorway while waiting for applause and applause they most definitely would as this dress is just so darn fabulous.

Not a gown for wallflowers, I think this is the perfect party dress to kick off what promises to be a grim and gloomy December.
