Court gown, British, c1750. Photo: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Behind the eighteenth window of my advent calendar of FLOUNCY DOOM there is this completely ridiculous court dress from the 1750s. What joy. Not really one for making an entrance unless there’s a massive doorway involved as otherwise you’d have to sidle in pathetically and who wants to do that?
I picked this dress in tribute to the astonishing A Royal Affair, which I have only just got around to watching. It’s pretty bleak stuff but extremely moving and ravishing to look at. This dress is, of course, a bit earlier in date to the ones in the film as it dates from around the time that Carolina Matilda of England, Queen of Denmark was born but the overall shape, especially of ludicrous tank like court gowns like this one, didn’t really change much over the next couple of decades.
Crikey, what a sad film, though. I feel even more miserable now.
