Adapting Your Home for Toddlers

Your idea of a relaxed family home will certainly change once your children become inquisitive little explorers. Because sometimes no matter how hard you try to put things out of reach they still somehow manage to crawl, climb or maneuver their way to your most precious objects.  Encouraging your child to play and explore safely is important for their independence, but you don’t have to sacrifice style over safety.  
Multi-Functional Furniture  It’s tough finding furniture that looks great in your home but also serves you well for hiding away the children’s toys when you’ve got guests. Especially if you don’t want them tripping up after dinner drinks!  Multi-functional furniture is the way it has to go when you’re a parent, not only because when the little ones are tucked up in bed, you can make it a relaxing space again, but also you can keep the interior style you want without having clunky looking children’s furniture.   Sofas with under seat storage are a popular item which are now available from many established retailers, and which mums can’t live without Ikea’s shelving units.   It’s a good idea to swap items that have sharp corners for rounded furniture that can avoid the accidents. Sharp corners seem to attract toddlers, and despite chasing around after them, knocks and bumps inevitably happen.  A Minimalist Approach As much as we all love the shabby chic décor that’s trending at the moment, it’s just not practical when you’ve got children. Taking a minimalist approach will save you the stress of having to constantly tell off the children for moving things, breaking things or even chewing on things.  Put away any important items and just keep out what you really need. A clean, minimalist design, can actually make you feel a lot more clear headed when it comes to relaxing at the end of a mad day with the little ones.  Make it Easy to Clean  Wet wipes and sanitiser spray are a mum’s ammunition for staying on top of mucky tots. But when it comes to the house it’s hard to find the time or the energy to keep on top of the cleaning.  Make it easier for yourself by adapting your home to be quicker to clean. This way you can cut down the time you spend when you need to hit the house with the marigolds. Laminate floors are much easier to keep on top of when there’s sticky hands and food spillages.  If you’re able to, try and do a deep clean once a month so that the house stays feeling fresh and as tidy as possible. There are a number of cleaning guides on the internet that can give you guidance on the products that you should use so that harsh bleaches don’t react with children’s sensitive skin.  Adapting your home for children doesn’t mean you have to let them take over. Create a safe environment, but ensure that you’re still happy with you home when they’re not about. After all, a clean and tidy home is just as good for the soul as it is for the children.
