I can not translate this name because maybe there is not the corresponding profession in the world. I had seen the acquafrescaio in Naples during one of my many trips in this beautiful city - that I love. Initially I thought it was an improvised profession but I have discovered that is a traditional work born in the Saint Lucia district. Of course! In the past the districts had their own identity. Saint Lucia was par excellence a fishermen village and the acquafrescai sold the sulphurous waters of Saint Lucia. The most lucky vendors had a fixed place, the others were peddlers on the carts. You could had a real choice of the purchased waters : not all the kind of water sold was necessarily a drinking water. Some waters could be used for other daily purposes . The stand of acquafrescai were full of lemons and oranges and they enriched the water with the juice of these fruits. Gradually the acquafrescaio has been disappeared, both for social and economic reasons. Even if Naples is no longer full of acquafrescai in all the streets, you can still find some stands and you can amaze in front of them. If you want to see with a acquafrescaio, you should go to Piazza Trieste and Trento, to be sure. In this way you will not to stroll around all the city looking for this elusive figure.If you fall in love for this traditional image, you can go to San Gregorio district: some statuettes of the crib portray the acquafrescaio with his big mugs and the lemons. Una delle professioni “strane “ che scomparendo e che era tipica nella città di Napoli sono gli acquafrescai. Non posso tradurvi il nome perché non c’è corrispettiva professione nel resto del mondo. Avevo visto L’acquafrescaio a Napoli durante una delle mie numerose gite in quella splendida città che adoro. Inizialmente pensavo fosse una professione improvvisata e invece ho scoperto che è un lavoro che ha radici nella tradizione della città: per essere più precisi del quartiere Santa Lucia. Certo! In passato i quartieri avevano una loro precisa identità. Santa Lucia era per eccellenza un borgo dio pescatori e gli acquafrescai vendevano l’acqua sulfurea di Santa Lucia. I più fortunati avevano un posto fisso mentre altri erano ambulanti su carretti. Si poteva avere una vera e propria scelta delle acque acquistabili in questa caratteristica attività commerciale e non tutta era necessariamente acque da bere .Poteva essere adibita ad altri usi di tipo quotidiano . Un tempo le bancarelle degli acquafrescai erano piene di limoni e arance e arricchivano la loro acqua con appunto il succo di questi agrumi. Pin piano questa figura professionale scomparve, sia per motivi sociali che economici, ma anche se Napoli non è più piena in tutte le vie di acquafrescai, potrete ancora imbattervi nei pochi che sono rimasti e stupirvi anche voi. Per non sbagliare, se volete vedere con certezza un acquafrescaio andate in piazza Trieste e Trento, almeno non vi toccherà girare per mezza città alla forsennata ricerca di questa fantomatica figura. E se vi siete innamorati di questa immagine così caratteristica andate a San Gregorio: sono state fatte delle statuine del presepe di natale che rappresentano l’acquafrescaio con i suoi gradi boccali e il limone. Il corrispettivo ambulante era l’acquaiolo dall’annuncio gridato che faceva quando si muoveva per le strade Acquaiuooolo!!
